Natural history of tropical riversAs we float along the picturesque river we discuss the myriad of life that makes this one of the most biodiverse areas left in the world. Topics include plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects and aquatic species. While emphasis is placed on the natural history of the area we also discuss landforms and river processes. Ecosystems of tropical coastal plainsThe Mossman River is diverse in the number of ecosystems on offer. Starting at the shorefronts we traverse through the mangroves and past open forests, grasslands, cane paddocks, intertidal sand and mud flats and on to the tropical lowland rainforests. The cruise offers information on the variety of ecosystems, the differences between them and their importance on a world wide scale. Bird watchingBird watching is Peter's hobby and he has been living in the area for the past thirty years. The morning cruise would expect to see around forty species ranging from shorebirds to rainforest specialists. The diversity of birds on offer is astounding. Every day we try to see as many as we can of the top five birds:- Great Billed Heron, Little Kingfisher, Mangrove Robin, Beach Stone-Curlew and Papuan Frogmouth. Wildlife spottingThese cruises specialise in viewing the wildlife associated with the river. They are run during the day and there is a dusk cruise to take in the after dark species. Please note that the Mossman River is part of a management plan that allows the capture of large crocodiles for removal. The crocodile population is low but there are some small individuals left on the river.PhotographyPhotographers, videographers, filmmakers and sound recordists have all used our services. Our Zodiac (rigid inflatable boat) offers a very stable platform and the large flat floor area allows the set up of photographic equipment. Specialist photographic cruise can be booked to allow better use of the facilities and to allow more time. Every day starts with a bird watching cruise (6:15 am) that takes around two to two and a half hours. Afterwards the emphasis for each cruise is dependant on the interests of the guests.
Our philosophy of ‘Explore, Discover, Understand' is important to us as we believe the environment on offer is highly significant.
